Explain why the `k_(a) and k_(b)` values of `alpha`-amino acids are very low.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The `k_(a)` value of `alpha`-amino acids are very low because, in `alpha`-amino acids, the acidic group is `-overset(oplus)NH_(3)` instead of `-COOH` group in carboxylic acids. Similarly, the `k_(b)` values of `alpha`-amino acids are very low because the basic group is `-COoverset(Θ)O` instead of `-HN_(2)` group in aliphatic amines.
