Amino acids behave like salts rather than simple amines or carboxylic acids. Explain

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

In aqueous solution, the carboxyl `(-COOH)` group loses a proton and the amino `(-NH_(2))` group accepts a proton to form a zwitterion. Thus amino acids behave like salts,
`H_(2)N - CHR - COOH hArr underset("(Zwitterion)")( H_(3) overset(oplus)(N) - CHR- CO overset(Θ)(O))`
