Consider the following configurations of the `alpha`-amino acid,
`R-CH (NH_(2)) - COOH`, in which the main carbon-chain is shown vertically keeping the `-COOH` group at the top. If the `-NH_(2)` group is on the right side of the `alpha`-
`{:(" "COOH," "COOH),(" "|alpha," |"alpha),(H-C-NH_(2),H_(2)N - C - H),(" |"," |"),(" "R(I)," "R(II)),("D-amino acid","L-amino acid"):}`
carbon (as in str. I), it is referred to as D-amino acid. On the other hand, if the `-NH_(2)` group is on the left side of the `alpha-`carbon (as in str. II), it is referred to as L-amino acid.
