1) Enteric nervous system , the second brain consists of sheaths of neurons embedded in the walls of the long tube of our gut , or alimentary canal .
2 ) The second brain measures about nine meters to end from the esophagus to the anus.
3) The second brain contains some 100 million neurons , more than in either the spinal cord or the peripheral nervous system.
4) It can operate independent of the brain and spinal cord.
5) It controls peristaltic movements , secretion of enzymes etc.
6) It contains support cell .
7) It can capable of coordination of reflexes .
8) The unique feature of this enteric nervous system is to alter its response depending on different factors such as bulk and nutrient composition .
9) Hence we can justify that the enteric nervous system as the second brain of the gut.
