Explain the determination of `DeltaH` of a reaction calorimetrically:

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The change of enthalpy `DeltaH` of a reaction can be measured in a calorimeter as shown in the figure. However the calorimeter is kept open to the atmosphere.

Calorimeter for measuring heat changes at constant pressure (atmosphere pressure)
The calorimeter is immersed in an insulated water bath fitted with stirrer and thermometer. The temperature of the bath is recorded in the beginning and after the end of the reaction and change in temperature is recorded. Knowing the heat capacity of water bath and calorimeter and also the change in temperature, the heat absorbed or evolved in the reaction can be calculated. This gives the enthalpy change `(DeltaH)` of the reaction.
