Define and explain the bond enthalpy `(Delta_("bond")H^(theta))`.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The bond dissociation enthalpy is the change in enthalpy when one mole of covalent bonds of a gaseous covalent compound is broken to form products in the gas phase.
In that case of diatomic molecules like `H_(2),HCl` etc., the enthalpy of atomization also the bond dissociation enthalpy. In the case of polyatomic molecules, bond dissociation enthalpy is different for different bonds within the same molecule.
