Explain the terms: extent of ionization ...

Explain the terms: extent of ionization and on what factors it depends

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Weak electrolytes are ionised only paratially. The ions produced as a result of dissociation of weak electrolytes are present in dynamic equilibrium with the undissociated molecules.
The factors of total number of moleculesof the electrolyte dissolved, that ionises at equilibrium is called degree of ionisation or degre of dissociation. The percent of ionised molecules is called extent of ionisation.
The factors that influence the extent of ionisation are
a. Concentration: With decrease in concentration or increase in dilution increases the ionisationi.
b. Temperature: Ionisation increases with increase in temperature.
