Explain the Arrhenius concept of acids and bases.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

According to Arrhenious concept.
An acid is a substance which can furnish hydrogen ionsin its aqueous solution. A base is a substance which can furnish hydroxyl ions in its aqueous solution. Substances such as `HNO_(3), HCl, CH_(3)COOH` are acids.
`HCL(aq)hArrH^(+)(aq)+Cl^(-)(aq)`
`HNO_(3)(aq)hArrH^(+)(aq)+NO_(3)^(-)(aq)`
The substances such as `NaOH, NH_(4)OH` are bases.
`NaOH(aq)hArrNa^(+)(aq)+OH^(-)(aq)`
`NH_(4)OH(aq)hArrNH_(4)^(+)(aq)+OH^(-)(aq)`
Acids such as `HCl` and `HNO_(3)` which are almost completely ionised in aqueous solutionis are strong acids whereas acids such as `CH_(3)COOGH` which are weakly ionised are called weak acids.
Similarly, bases which are almost completely ionised in aqueous solutiions are termed as strong bases whereas bases `NH_(4)OH` are only slightly ionised and are called weak bases.
According to Arrhenius theory, neutralisation of acids and bases is basically a reactioin between `H^(+)` and `OH^(-)` ions solutions.
`H^(+)(aq)+OH^(-)(aq)hArrH_(2)O(l)`
