Classify the species `AlCl_(3), NY_(3), Mg^(+2)` and `H_(2)O` into Lewis acids and Lewis bases and justify your answer?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Lewis acids are those which accept Ione pair of electrons and Lewis bases are those which donate pair of electrons.
`AlCl_(3)` can accept Ione pair. So it is Lewis acid.
`NH_(3)` can donate a Ione pair. So it is Lewis base.
Cations can accept Ione pair of electrons.
So `Mg^(2+)` is Lewis acid.
`H_(2)O` can donate a Ione pair. So itis a Lewis base.
