Aqueous solution of `NH_(4)Cl` is acidic. Explain.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Ammonium chloride when dissolved in water react with water forming weak base ammonium hydroxide and strong acid `HCl`.
`NH_(4)Cl+H_(2)OhArrNH_(4)OH+HCl`
`HCl` is a strong acid ionising completely but `NH_(4)OH` being weak base do not ionise completely. So there remains some excess `H^(+)` ions in the solution. Due to this reason the aqueous solution of ammonium chloride is acidic.
