Give reason that acetic acid is less aci...

Give reason that acetic acid is less acidic in sodium acetate solution than in sodium chloride solution.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The ionic equilibrium reactions of acetic acid, sodium acetate and sodium chloride are as follows
`CH_(3)COOHhArrCH_(3)COO_(-)+H^(+)`
`CH_(3)COONatoCH_(3)COO^(-)+Na^(+)`
`NaCl to Na^(+)+Cl^(-)`
Acetic acid is weak electrolyte and there exists equilibrium. Sodium acetate being strong electrolyte ionises completely furnishing acetate ions. Due to the common ion effect fo acetate ions the ionisation of acetic acid decreases. So acetic acid behave as weak acid in the presence of acid acetate. Sodium chloride do give any ions common in the ionisation equilibrium of acetic acid. So NaCl has no effect on the ionisation of acetic acid, thereby no effect on acid strength. Hence acetic acidis more acidic in sodium chloride.
