The fluorides of alkaline earth metals are relatively less soluble than their respective chlorides in water. Why?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Fluoride ion is small in size. The lattice energy of ionic compound is inversely proportional to the ionic sizes. So the fluorides of alkaline earth metals have high lattice energy. As size of other halide ions are large then lattice energy decreases. So fluorides of alkaline earth metals are relatively less soluble than their respective chlorides in water.
