Discuss the similarities between alkaline earth metals and gradation in the following aspects:
(iii) Nature of the oxides and hydroxides.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Nature of oxides and hydroxides : The oxides and hydroxides of alkaline earth metals are strongly alkaline in nature. BeO and `BE(OH)_(2)` are amphoteric. The oxides of other elements are ionic and basic in nature. The oxides react with water forming hydroxides.
`MO + H_(2)O to M(OH)_(2)`
The solubility, thermal stability and the basic character of these oxides and hydroxides increase with increasing atomic number.
