How does `CO_2` increase the greenhouse effect ?

The increase in combustion of fossil fuels and decomposition of lime stone, etc. increases the `CO_2` content in the atmosphere. This may lead to increase in the greenhouse effect, thus raise the temperature of the atmosphere which might have serious consequences.
