Ir is a volatile fuming liquid. It hydrolyses in water by accepting lone pair of electrons from water molecules in d - orbitals of Si, finally leading to the formation of `Si (OH)_4`.
Uses:
1) `SiCl_4` and `NH_3` mixture is used to produce smoke screens.
2) `SiO_2` prepared from `SiCl_4` is used in epoxy paints, resins, etc.
