Explain the following.
Diamond is an abrasive

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

In diamond every carbon is in `sp_3` hybridisation and is in bond with four other carbon atoms tetrahedrally. The structure extends in space and produce a rigid three dimensional network of carbon atoms. In this structure directional covalent bonds are present throughout the lattice. To break these covalent bonds very high energy is required. Therefore diamond is the hardest substance and thus can be used as abrasive.
