Show that the direction of velocity is t...

Show that the direction of velocity is tangent to the path at a point of interest when a body is in uniform circular motion.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

1) Carefully whirl a small object on the end of the string in the horizontal plane.
2) Release the object while it is whirling on the string.
3) We observe that the body along the tangent at the point where we released the body.
Try to release the object at different points on the circle and observe the direction of motion of object after it has been released form the string.
5) We will notice that the object moves on a straight line along the tangent to the circle at the point where we released it.

If the direction of velocity changes continuously and speed remains constant, then the body will be in ………….. Motion.

(A) : In a position - time graph, the direction of velocity vector is always along the tangent to the path (R): The slope of tangent to path always measure the magnitude of velocity at that point

(A): Two similar trains are moving along the equatorial line with the same speed but in opposite direction. They will exert equal pressure on the rails. (R): In uniform circular motion the magnitude and direction of acceleration remains constant but the direction of motion continuously changes.
