`Cl^(-)` has completely filled K and L shells. Explain.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Atomic number of `Cl` is 17, but `Cl^(-)` has one more electron when compared with `Cl` atom.
Distribution of electrons in `Cl^(-)` is `|{:(K,L,M),(2,8,8):}`
K shell can accommodate 2 electrons and L shell can accommodate 8 electrons according to the formula `2n^(2)`.
Hence the K and L shells are completely filled.
