A clock regulated by a seconds pendulum ...

A clock regulated by a seconds pendulum keeps correct time. During summer the length of the pendulum increases to `1.02m`. How much will the clock gain or lose in one day?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Time period of seconds pendulum `T=2` sec.
Length of seconds pendulum, `L=gT^(2)//4pi^(2)=0.9927m`
Length of seconds pendulum during summer `=1.02m`
`therefore `Error in length , `Deltal=1.02-1=0.0273`
In pendulum `T prop sqrtl`. From principles or error
`(DeltaT)/(T)=(1)/(2)(Deltal)/(l)-(1)/(2)(0.0273)/(0.9927)`
`therefore` Error in time per day `=86,400xx(1)/(2)(0.0273)/(0.9927)=1188sec`.
