If an electric dipole is placed in a non-uniform electric field, does any torque or force act on the dipole?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

If an electric dipole is placed in a non-uniform electric field, two non-equal, non-parallel forces act at the two ends of the dipole. These forces acting on the dipole produce both rotational and translational motions.
So in this case, a torque and a force both act on the dipole.
