Why electric fields just outside the surface of a conductor is perpendicular to the surface?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Charge in a conductor resides on the outer surface. If an unit positive charge is placed just outside the surface to the conductor then it is attracted or repulsed perpendicular to the surface, that is the electric field at that position is also along the perpendicular to the surface.
