One of the important human filaria is the African eye worm. Loa loa, transmitted by mangofly chiefly found in Africa. They commonly invade subcutaneous tissue and during their migration may pass across the eye ball hence the name eyeworm.
Loa microfilariae is very injurious and fatal when they penetrate brain and spinal cord and perhaps carry neurotropic viruses. During their migration, they cause itense itching and swelling. They also cause swelling and pair in eyes, known as ''calabar swelling''
