Intermolecular Forces – Definition, Concept & Types

Forces of attraction on the molecular level are classified into two categories – the forces inside a molecule holding atoms together, and the forces between molecules holding molecules together. In the image below, the forces holding the oxygen and hydrogen atoms together are the intramolecular forces  (IMFs). Intramolecular forces are the forces inside the molecule and consist of ionic and covalent bonds. Intermolecular forces hold the H20molecules together to be in the state of liquid water or ice.
