Because light reaction is much faster than dark reaction. So in continuous light there is accumulation of ATP and `NADPH_(2)` and hence reduction in rate of photosynthesis but in discontinuous light, ATP and `NADPH_(2)` formed in light are fully consumed during dark in reduction of `CO_(2)` to carbohydrates.
