What is oxidation state of a central atom in a co-ordination entity?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

(i) The oxidration state of a central atom in a coordination entity is defined as the charge it would bear if all the ligand were removed along with the electron pairs that were shared with the central atom.
(ii) In naming a complex ,it is represented by a Roman numeral. For example ,in the coordination entity `[Fe(CN)_6]^(4-) ` the oxidation state of iron is represented as (II) .
(iii) The net charge on the complex ion is equal to the sum of the oxidation state of the central metal and the charge the on the ligands attached to it.
