Assertion (R) SF(6) is known but SCl(6) ...

Assertion (R) `SF_(6)` is known but `SCl_(6)` is not.
Reason (R) Due to small size of F.

A

Both A and R are correct, R is the correct explanation of A

B

Both A and R are correct, R is not the correct explanation of A

C

A is correct, R is incorrect

D

R is correct, A is incorrect

The correct Answer is:
A

`SF_(6)` is known but `SCl_(6)` is not . It is due to the small size of fluorine . Six `F^(-)` ions can be accommodated around sulphur while chloride ion is comparatively larger in size , thus there will be interatomic repulsion .

SF_(6) is known but SC_(6) is not. Why?

Assertion: SiF_(6)^(2-) is known but SiCl_(6)^(2-) is not. Reason: Size of fluorine is small and its lone pair of electrons intersects with d-orbitals of Si strongly.

(a) Give reasons for the following : (i) SF_(6) is a well known compound but SCl_(6) is not known (ii) In aqueous solution, HF is a weaker acid than HCl (iii) Addition of Cl_(2) to KF solution gives it a brown colour but excess of Cl_(2) turns it colourless (b) Draw the structures of (i) Peroxodisulphuric acid (ii) bromine trifluoride.
