Two bulbs `B_1 " and " B_2` rated (50W, 100V) and (100W, 100V) respectively, are connected in series and this series combination is connected to a 220V source. Which one of the following option is correct?

A

Both bulbs will blow out

B

Bulb `B_1` will blow out

C

Bulb `B_2` will blow out

D

The correct Answer is:
B

use `P=V^2/R`

`R_1(100xx100)/(50)=200Omega`
`R_2=(100xx100)/(100) = 100Omega`
Voltage across `B_1`
`V_1 = 200/300xx200=440/3V=146.67V`
Voltage across `B_2`
`V_2=100/300xx220=220/3 = 73.33V`
`V_1` is more than the rated voltage while `V_2` is less than that rated voltage hence bulb `B_1` will blow out
