Totipotency of cells was first demonstrated by Sweward et al. (1964) using the phloem cells of carrot roots and allowing them to grow on Whites medium. A cell, while growing on culture medium, developed callus, then plantlet and ultimately a complete plant showing, thereby, that each every cell (only the living cells) has the ability to produce complete plant if proper environment is provided.
