Why halogens act as oxidising agents?...

Why halogens act as oxidising agents?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Halogens act as oxidising agent their electronic configuration is `ns^(2)np^(5)` so all the halogens are ready to gain one electron to attain the nearest insert gas configuration An oxidising agent is the one which is ready to gain an electron .so all the holegens act as oxidising agents Also halogents are highly electronegative with low disoriation energy and high negative electron gain enthalpies therefore , the halogens have a high tendency to gain an electron.
