Why alkaline earth metals are harder than alkali metals.

Text Solution

(i) Atomic radius of alkaline earth metals are small and their densities are larger than those of alkali metals.
(ii) Alklaine earth metals have close packed crystal structure
(iii) Generally alkaline earth metals are soft yet less than that of alkali metals.
This is because the metallic bonding in alkaline earth metals are stronger than alkali metals.
