Which would you expect to have a higher melting point, magnesium oxide or magnesium fluoride? Explain your reasoning.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

(i) Magnesium ocide has very strong ionic bonds as compared to magnesium fluoride.
(ii) `Mg^(2+)` and `O^(2-)` have charges of +2 and -2 respectively.
(iii) Oxygen ion is smaller than fluoride ion the bond length in Mgo and bond is stroger then `MgF_2`
(iv) Due to more strong bond nature in `MgO`, it has high melting point than `MgF_2`
