What is dipole moment ?...

What is dipole moment ?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

(i) The polarity of a covalent bond can be measured in terms of dipole moment which is defined as `mu = q xx 2d`. Where `mu` is the distance between the two charges.
(ii) The dipole moment is a vector quantity and the direction of the dipole moment points from the negative charge to positive charge.
(iii) The unit of dipole moment is coulomb metre (cm) . It is usually expressed in Debye unit (D) .
(iv) 1 Debye ` = 3.336 xx 10^(30) `cm .
