What happens when chloroform react with oxygen in the presence of sunlight?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Chloroform undergoes oxidation in the presence of light and air to form phosgene (carbonyl chloride)
`underset("Chloroform")(CHCl_(3)+(1)/(2))O_(2) underset(light)overset(air)to underset("Phosgene")(COCl_(2))+HCl`
Since phosgene is very poisonous, its presence makes chloroform unffit for use as anaesthetic.
