Hydrogen peroxide can act both as an oxidizing agent and a reducing agent . Oxidation is usually performed in acidic medium while the reduction reactions are performed in basic medium.
In acidic conditions:
`H_(2)O_(2)+2H^(+)+2e^(-)rarr2H_(2)O(E^(@)=+1.77V)`
`2FeSO_(4)+H_(2)SO_(4)+H_(2)O_(2)rarrFe_(2)(SO_(4))_(3) +2H_(2)O`
In basic conditions :
`HO^(2-)+OH^(-)rarrO_(2)+H_(2)O+2^(e-)`
`(E^(@)=+0.08V)`
For Example,
`2KMnO_(4_(aq))+3H_(2)O_(2_(aq))rarr2MnO_(2)+2KOH+2H_(2)O+3O_(2(g))`
