Explain why HCl is a gas HF is a liquid?

Text Solution

HF is a liquid due to the strong intermolecular hydrogen bonds between two molecules.
Whereas in HCl, due to large size of chlorine atom and low electron density it does not exhibit hydrogen bonding so exists as gas.
