Give reason for the following : N(2)...

Give reason for the following :
`N_(2)O_(5)` is more acidic than `N_(2)O_(3)`.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

`N_(2)O_(5)` is more acidic than `N_(2)O_(3)` because `N_(2)O_(3)` is the anhydride of nitrous acid.
`N_(2)O_(3)` dissolves in water to form the unstable acid
`N_(2)O_(3)+H_(2)O rarr underset("unstable")(2HNO_(2))`
On the otherhand, `N_(2)O_(5)` is the anhydride of nitric acid. `N_2)O_(5)` is the anhydride of nitric acid. `N_(2)O_(5)` dissolves in water to form nitric acid.
`N_(2)O_(5)+H_(2)O rarr 2HNO_(3)`
`N_(2)O_(5)` has higher acidic strength than `N_(2)O_(3)`. Acidic nature depends on oxidation number. Higher the oxidation number geater the tendency of gainig electron.
