Consider 'n' particles of masses `m_(1), m_(2),.....,m_(n)`, distributed in space at postions `vec(r_1), vec r_(2), vec(r_3)`..... etc, with respect to point P. The total gravitational field at a point P due to all the masses is given by the vector sum of the gravitational field due to the individual masses. This principle is known as superposition of gravitational fields.
`E_("total") = vec(E_1) + vec(E_2) + ....vec(E_n)`
`= - (Gm_1)/(r_1^2) hat(r_1) - (Gm_2)/(r_2^2) - .....(Gm_n)/(r_n^2) hat(r)_(n) = -sun_(i=1)^(n) (Gm_i)/(r_(i)^(2)) hat(r)_(i)`
