Explain in detail the idea of weightless...

Explain in detail the idea of weightlessness using lift as an example.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

When the lift falls (when the lift wire cuts) with downward acceleration a = g, the person inside the elevator is in the state of weightlessness or free fall.
As they fall freely, they are not in contact with any surface (by neglecting air friction). The normal force acting on the object is zero. The downward acceleration is equal to the acceleration due to the gravity of the Earth, i.e., `(a = g)`. From equation `N = m(g - a). a = g`
`:. N = m(g - g) = 0`
This is called the state of weigthlessness.
