Explanation

1. The HCI maintains the acidic medium in the stomach (PH 1.8).
2. The enzymes in the stomach act in acidic medium only .
3. Further the proenzyme pepsinogen gets converted into acitive enzyme pepsin on exposure to HCI only. Pepsin is a major proteolytic enzymes in the stomach .
4. HCI also kills bacteria and other harmful organisms .
5. It also avoids putrefaction. Thus if HCI is not secreted in the stomach the digestion of food in the stomach will not take place.
