Growth hormone is also known as somatotrophic hormone is important for normal growth because it performs the following functions
1. Growth hormone promotes growth of all the tissues and metaboic process of the body.
2. It influences the metabolism of carbohydrates proteins and lipids and increases the rate of protein biosyntheses in the cells.
3. It stimulates chondrogenesis ( cartilage formation) osteogeneisis ( bone formation ) and helps in the retention of minerals like nitrogen potassium,phosphorus , sodium etc . , in the body.
4. GH increases the release of fatty acid from adipose tissue and decreases the rate of glucose utilization for energy by the cells. Thus it conserves glucose for glucose dependents tissues , such as the brain.
