Which of the followig statements are true about surfactants ? (i) Thin non- cellular films made of protein and phospholipids - covering alveolar membrane. (ii) Their synthesis begins only after the 25^(th) week of gestation . (iii) They lower the surface tension in the alveoli and prevents the lungs from collapsing. (iv) They are synthesised and secreted by type II cells of the squamouse epithelial cells of alveoli.

The half life of radon is 3.8 days. After how long there will be only one twentieth of radon sample left over?

A particle of mass 10g moves along a circle of radius 6.4 cm with a constant tangential acceleration . What is the mafnitude of this acceleration if the kinetic energy of the particle becomes equal to 8xx10^(-4)J by the end of the second revolution after the beginning of the motion?

Take a small stone. Hold it in your hand. We know that the force gravity due to the earth acts on each and every object. When we were holding the stone in our hand, the stone was experiencing this force, but it was balanced by a force that we were applying on it in the opposite direction. As a result, the stone remained at rest. Once we release the stone from our hands the only force that acts on it is the gravitational force of the earth and the stone falls down under its influence. Whenever an object moves under the influence of the force of gravity alone, it is said to be falling freely. Thus the released stone is in a free fall. In free fall, the initial velocity of the object is zero and goes on increasing due to acceleration due to gravity of the earth. During free fall, the frictional force due to air opposes the motion of the object and a buoyant force also acts on the object. Thus, true free fall is possible only in vacuum. For a freely falling object, the velocity on reaching the earth and the time taken for it can be calculated by using Newton's equations of motion. For free fall the initial velocity u=0 and the acceleration a=g . Thus, we can write the equations as v="gt",s=1/2"gt"^(2),v^(2)=2gs For calculating the motion of an object thrown upwards, acceleration is negative, i.e. in a direction opposite to the velocity and is taken to be -g. The magnitude of g is the same but the velocity of the object decreases due to -ve acceleration. The moon and the artificial satellites are moving only under the influence of the gravitational field of the earth. Thus they are in free fall. Which force acts on the stone in free fall after you release it?

Which of the following two statements are correct ? (i) Medical termination of pregnancy (MTP) during first trimester is generally safe (ii) Generally chances of conception are nil until mother breast-feeds the infant upto two years (iii) Intrauterine devices like copper-T are effective contraceptives (iv) Contraception pills may be taken upto one week after coutus to prevent conception.

Figure shows water in a container having 2.0-mm thick walls made of a material of thermal conductivity 0.50Wm^(-1)C^(-1) . The container is kept in a melting-ice bath at 0^(@)C . The total surface area in contact with water is 0.05m^(2) . A wheel is clamped inside the water and is coupled to a block of mass M as shown in the figure. As the goes down, the wheel rotates. It is found that after some time a steady state is reached in which the block goes down with a constant speed of 10cms^(-1) and the temperature of the water remains constant at 1.0^(@)C .Find the mass M of the block. Assume that the heat flow out of the water only through the walls in contact. Take g=10ms^(-2) .
