A species is considered extinct when none of its members are alive anywhere in the world.
(i) Mass extinction: The earth has experienced quite a few mass extinctions due to environmental catastrophes. A mass extinction occurred about 225 million years ago during the Permian, where 90% of shallow water marine invertebrates disappeared.
(ii) Mass extinctions cannot be predicted. They are caused due to natural disaster like Earthquake, Tsunami etc.
(iii) The only way to reduce the impact of natural disaster is by adopting ecofriendly. Means of living and not disturbing nature.
(iv) Misuse and mismanagement of natural resources must be avoided. Conservation of biodiversity must be the aim of every individual.
