(i) Trade name ' Basta' refers to a non-selctive herbicide containing the chemical compound the chemical compound phosphinothricin .
(ii) Basta herbicide tolerant gene PPT (L-phoshinothricin ) was isolated from Medicago sative plant.
(iii) It inhibits the enzyme glutamine synthase which is involved in ammonia assimilation.
(iv) The PPT gene was introduced into tobacco and transgenic tobacco produced was resistant to PPT .
(v) Similar enzyme was also isolated from streptomyces hygroscopicus with bar gene encodes for PAT (Phoshinothricin acetyl transferase ) and was introduced into crop plants line potato and suger-best and transgenic crops have been developed .
