What is meant by a conservative force?...

What is meant by a conservative force?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

A force F(x) is conservative if `DeltaP.E.=-F(x)Deltax`.
The work done by a conservative force depends on the initial and final points but not on the actual path covered.
i.e., `W=K_(f)-K_(i)=-(PE_(f)-PE_(i))`
A force is also said to be conservative when work done by this force in a closed path is zero. Also for a conservative force, the total mechanical energy is conserved.
