The bottom of the skis/skates is sharp. Explain why.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The sharp edges at the bottom of the skis exert enormous pressure on the snow/ice. This reduces the freezing point of water. Ice melts into water. This water acts as a lubricant. When the pressure on the skis is removed, water refreezes back This phenomenon is also called as regelation.
