Newton assumed that the isothermal condition prevails as there is adequate time for equalisation of temperature between the disturbed portion of the medium ( system ) and the rest of the air ( surrounding ) . However Laplace arged that change in pressure and volume in the region of rarefaction and compression is adiabatic as there is inadequate timefor temperature equilibrium .
`v = sqrt((gamma p)/( rho ))` is Laplace equation for speed of sound in air.
