Distinguish between progressive waves and stationary waves.

Text Solution

(i)Progressive waves transfer energy, where stationary waves do not.
(ii) No particles of the medium are in a state of rest in a PW but in a SW, the particles at nodes will be at rest.
(iii) The particle velocity will remain the same for a given displacement in a PW, whereas in a SW, particles at nodes will have zero speed and at antinodes, particles have maximum speed.
(iv) `y= f(x,t) ` for a PW and `y = f(x) g(t)` for a SW.
( v) Distance between two points at which particle have same state of vibration is called wavelength in a PW whereas distance between two consecutive nodes or antinodes is half the wavelength.
