A metre long tube open at one end with a movable piston at the other end, shows resonance with a fixed frequency source ( a tuning fork of frequency 340Hz) when the tube length is 0.255m or 0.793m. Estimate the speed of sound in air at the temperature of the experiment. The edge effects may be neglected.

Given,` l_(1) = 0.255m, l_(2) = 0.793m, f = 340 Hz`.
We know that `v = 2f ( l_(2) - l_(1)) = 2 xx 340 xx(0.793 -0.255)`
`v =365.84ms^(-1)`
Velocity of sound in air `= 367ms^(-1)`

Two narrow bores of diameters 3.00mm and 6.0mm are joined together to form a U-tube open at both ends. If the U-tube contains water, what is the difference in its levels in the two limbs of the tube?
