The transmitted signal loses energy travelling through a medium (attenuation). The receiver consists of an amplifier which amplifies the modulated carrier wave. The local oscillator produces a variable frequency range so that on selection of broadcast signal frequency, the receiver produces a beat frequency called intermediate frequency which remains a constant irrespective of broadcast frequencies. The detector separates the carrier frequency from the low frequency which is then sufficiently amplified before connecting to the transducer.
