Discuss average atomic mass with an exam...

Discuss average atomic mass with an example.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Atomic mass of most of the elements are fractions, because of presence of isotopes (ex:- Cl-35 and Cl-37). To calculate average atomic mass, of different isotopes and their relative abundances are to be considered.
Ex:- Chlorine contains Cl-35 and Cl-37 in the ratio `3:1`
`therefore` average atomic mass of chlorine `=(35 xx 3 + 37 xx 1)/4 = 35.5`
